Ocean Defenders
Inspire your students to become the next generation of Ocean Defenders:
Wembury Marine Centre offers guided sessions inspiring young people to take positive action for their local marine environment by becoming Ocean Defenders. These sessions are available to schools and other educational and private groups and can also be part of our wider Marine Wildlife Champions project.
Our Ocean Defender sessions are delivered by a Devon Wildlife Trust staff member based at Wembury Marine Centre and are supported by our team of volunteers. Devon Wildlife Trust has full public liability and employer’s liability insurance for all our activities at Wembury beach, our staff are qualified First Aiders and hold an enhanced DBS check.
Ocean Defender sessions can include:
Litter survey and beach cleans
We offer guided beach cleaning sessions with full equipment provided. Pupils can carry out a citizen science litter survey using a tally chart to note down the types of beach litter they collect. The data can be taken back to school for use in follow up classroom lessons.
Marine litter quiz
Combined with the litter survey and beach clean, we offer an interactive marine pollution quiz on the beach, asking students to consider the decomposition rates of common marine litter items such as plastic bottles, cigarette butts and banana skins!
Beachcombing
The natural wonders washed up on the beach should not be overlooked! We offer guided beachcombing sessions searching for items such as mermaids' purses, cuttlefish bones and crab shell moults. This can be delivered in conjunction with a litter survey and beach clean so both natural and unnatural items are recorded and discussed.
Ocean Defender sessions are charged at £4.75 per pupil per activity (2024 price), but there is normally a discount for booking more than one activity on the same day.
The sessions can be booked year-round so please Contact Us to discuss in more detail or Book Now
